With VW having faced a multi-billion fine for skirting diesel emissions laws and Germany outright banning the fuel in certain parts of the country, you might think our Bavarian brethren are well on their way to completely ousting the fuel. You would be wrong, however, and we have the new VW Touareg V8 TDI as proof.
Under the hood of the Touareg V8 TDI is the German automaker’s hulking 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 diesel engine, which is good for 420 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. Paired with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, this big diesel will hustle the VW from 0-60 mph in just 4.9s and top out at an electronically limited 155 mph (250 km/h).

VW is offering the Touareg V8 TDI with two well-equipped design packages as standard: ‘Elegance’ and ‘Atmosphere’, with ‘Elegance’ featuring dark tones and metal trim and ‘Atmosphere’ focusing on warmer tones with wood trim. VW’s R-Line design package can be added to the vehicle as well, which adds sportier front and rear fascias and side skirts, a sports steering wheel and sport seats, among more.
Other standard equipment on Touareg V8 TDIs includes four-corner air suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, an automatic rear tailgate and the ‘Light & Sight’ package, which adds electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors and automatic headlight control with anti-dazzle.
The new Touareg V8 TDI will go on sale in Europe in May of this year. Pricing has yet to be announced.
